Chocolately Banana and Nutella Brownies

Today’s chocolate-y, gooey, cakey deliciousness comes to you in the form of these banana and Nutella brownies. I made these last weekend because somehow Saturday rolled around and we found ourselves with an absolute mountain of bananas that were way too ripe. I hate wasting food but I was tired of making banana bread all the time. Enter cocoa powder, swirls of creamy, delicious Nutella goodness, mashed bananas — and voila! Chocolate madness in one bite.

Are you into Nutella? For me, Nutella is therapy in a spoon. If I’m having a bad day, or if the kids are stressing me out from all of their bickering, or if I don’t know, it’s Sunday night and I’m a little bored, I’ll run to our pantry cupboard and take a dip into our Nutella jar. A couple of twists of the wrist to swirl some Nutella onto the spoon, followed by an eyes-closed gulp, and all is right with the world again.

Sometimes I wonder what I look like, sitting at the dining room table holding a single spoon in a dreamy, Nutella-induced fog. I imagine it’s probably more dignified to sit at the table with a glass of red wine and a good earthy piece of runny French cheese. But I am not prone to dignity in my house, and neither are the other members of my family. The number of times I have to remind people in this house to wear pants, wipe their faces and leave the house wearing actual, matching shoes would shock and dismay you. (Two pairs of socks do not equal one pair of shoes. Sigh.)

Anyway, if Nutella alone cures us of the insanity in our households at any given time, these banana and Nutella brownies are the ultimate savior. I added an extra handful of chocolate chips into mine, because really, how can it hurt? It can’t. If a luxurious, sweet treat has the ability to transport us to a higher, happier place, then let it take the form of these banana and Nutella brownies.

When I pulled these banana and Nutella brownies from the oven last weekend, Ge Ge (my seven-year-old son) happened to be running a lemonade stand in front of our apartment. The wafting chocolate aroma drew him him, and he got near the tray of brownies and inhaled deeply.

“Mom,” he said, looking up at me imploringly with those addictive doe eyes he has. “I’d like to try one of these, please.”

How could I resist? I sliced into the tray. He took a bite, proclaiming the brownies a success. Then he looked back at me.

“I’d like to sell the rest of these down at my lemonade stand. Slice them up. I’m pricing them at £1 a piece.”

I put my foot down. “We have friends coming over. I want to serve them as a snack.”

“Who said they wouldn’t pay for these?”

Chocolately Banana and Nutella Brownies

  • 3/4 cup 175g unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup 180g brown sugar
  • 7 ounces 200g dark chocolate, chopped roughly
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 100 g self-raising flour (sifted)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup 55g Nutella
  • optional: 1/2 cup (115g semi-sweet chocolate chips)

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius). Tear off a piece of parchment paper a bit larger than the size of a 9-inch square pan and crumple it up, then use it to line the bottom and sides of the pan.
  • Heat a small saucepan over low heat and melt the butter, brown sugar and chocolate together until it forms a nice, smooth mixture. Remove the pan from heat and pour into a large bowl. Add the vanilla, eggs, Nutella and bananas and mix well.
  • Sift together the flour and cocoa powder and then mix it into the egg mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips if using and pour into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until the center is set and a toothpick inserted comes out relatively clean. Remove the pan from the oven and set on top of a wire rack to cool completely.
  • To serve, lift up the sides of the parchment paper to remove the brownies from the pan and slice with a serrated knife.
