Irrational craving #1: really good French fries (these are from 39 Rue de Jean).
One of the genetic traits that seems to have been passed down through my family is a propensity for sudden, irrational food cravings. The originator of this condition I think started with my grandpa, who used to take me on unannounced trips to “get snacks” from the drugstore. I don’t remember what we ate or why, but I do remember it was always a good time. He was like that.
My dad has inherited this trait, too. I don’t want to air his dirty laundry, but let’s just say that on more than one occasion he’s told me to take a swerve to the nearest IHOP or pizza joint to grab a bite. And let’s just say that on more than one occasion he may have regretted that decision, but you know, we all have our weak moments. One of my sisters (who will remain unnamed) may also have a thing for Filet O’ Fish sandwiches. Hey, we may be all about the haute cuisine sometimes, but we also like it just plain good and cheap, too.

As for me – well, here are a few of my irrational cravings as of late. I can’t seem to shake my fry addiction. My favorites are Parmesan crusted and drizzled with truffle oil, but if I’m feeling down and dirty just a good shake of some Cajun seasoning and ketchup will do me just fine, too.
The return of shrimp down here in the Lowcountry isn’t doing me any favors, either. I can’t seem to pass by a white shrimp without wanting to boil it up and dunk it with some fresh lemon juice.
As for my last craving — well, let’s just say it’s whatever grows from the spring garden these guys are keeping in our backyard.
