five dishes, five days

Earlier today, as I flipped through my pictures from the past week, it dawned on my that I’ve done a lot more cooking than usual.  Rather than bore you with a multitude of posts on all the things we’ve been consuming en nuestra casa, I thought I’d just show you what we’ve been eating and let you tell me what you’d like me to make you to eat the next time we find ourselves in the same city with nothing to do, a giant fresh seabass and two jars of capers.  I bet we could get into some trouble together.

Now, in no particular order, may I present to you Day 1: steamed local cod in assam chili sauce (courtesy of Liza’r, my favorite spice lady) and garnished with fresh cilantro, which I served with sauteed baby bok choy and coconut rice.

Day 2: Carrot slaw with dried cranberries, almonds and cumin.  We also had oven-fried chicken that day, but because I’m really inexperienced with substituting baking for frying, I didn’t take any photos.  The chicken came out pale and much less golden-brown than I’d hoped, which basically means that little experiment will go down in history as The Time Biscuitwheels Tried Baking Instead of Frying, and Hated It.

Day 3: I can’t really take credit for this one.  The hubby made me breakfast in bed.  On my little tray I got slices of cheddar cheese, two fried eggs, toast with salted French butter, and Greek yogurt with moscato cherries.  Oh, and a Yakult, which is quite possibly the finest probiotic yogurt drink from Japan.

Day 4: Leek and zucchini quiche with homemade pie pastry.  I’m really trying to get my pie crust down just so, and as you can see this was a less-than-perfect attempt.  I let the pastry bake in the oven a little too long, and it pulled away from the sides of the pie plate a bit too much.

Day 5: Sea bass poached in white wine with a lemon caper chive sauce.  I find this dish to be particularly satisfying to eat with a baguette while watching and yelling at the competitors on American Idol.

So, what are we going to make to eat together, and when?  What are you cooking tonight?

Let's start a personal, meaningful conversation.

LJsays:

Who are you going for on American Idol? Naturally, I am rooting for all the contestants that are from Texas (and there are a lot).

I made sour cream chicken enchiladas with green chile sauce the other night, but of course the tortillas split – so it was basically casserole – and I can’t figure out where to get fresh corn tortillas here. Sigh. I only was able to make the chile sauce because Whole Foods has a Mexican section that had canned chiles. And yes I realize that my complaints pale in comparison to yours…

biscuitwheelssays:

I was an early Andrew Garcia fan, but like the judges, I think I was taken in by that Paula Abdul cover he did. Which, of course, then begs the question as to why I never saw this show until after Paula Abdul left it.

Your enchiladas sound amazing! And I can’t believe you have Whole Foods in London! You’re so lucky! I’m feeling my way around the local markets here for everything, except Oreos and Doritos. Those are everywhere.

Elizabethsays:

I made fish tacos with mango salsa and red cabbage slaw, but alas couldn’t find chipotle peppers anywhere for the chipotle sour cream. Also the limes here are terrible and don’t contain any actual juice. I realize you asked for suggestions of what to make together and Laura and I proceeded to just complain….no cable, no American Idol for me, luckily last season of American’s Top Model is currently showing here on the networks

biscuitwheelssays:

Fish tacos sounds great — weird about NZ limes, though! Wonder why that is. No worries on complaining over expat life — it happens!
