little plate of happiness: banh xeo

I was sick last week.  Too sick to take our friends around town the way I’d planned.  Too sick to play with my baby.  Too sick to even think about eating.  When I finally pulled myself together enough for us to go out to our favorite Malay restaurant, we fought traffic for an hour and fifteen minutes only to discover that the restaurant was fully booked for the evening.

Defeated, I suggested Sao Nam, a Vietnamese restaurant in the same part of town that wouldn’t require much more idling in traffic.  I underplayed the deliciousness of Sao Nam partly because of the illness, and partly because I was disappointed we wouldn’t be able to share Malay food with our guests on their last night in Kuala Lumpur.

But as soon as we sat down and a lightly crispy, slightly coconut-y banh xeo (egg crepe stuffed with shrimp and fresh veggies) arrived in front of us, all was right with the world again.  Thanks, Sao Nam.

Also for your viewing pleasure: Sao Nam’s delightful red dragonfruit and prawn salad:
