the most wonderful time of the year

The walls of craft stores in Chinatown are stacked from floor to ceiling with ornaments of every size, shape and color imaginable

Without pesky American Thanksgiving to get in the way of Malaysian holiday merriment here in Kuala Lumpur, we’ve skipped directly from Halloween to Christmas.  No part of town exhibits the onslaught of holiday cheer better than Chinatown, oddly enough.

When we wandered into Chinatown last weekend, just because it’s been awhile, we were taken aback at how many storefronts had converted into everything Christmas.  This time of year, however, it seems like Malaysia is celebrating one holiday after another.  I guess Christmas is just another one to add into the rotation.

Of course, some parts of Chinatown were still business as usual.  We watched this man expertly peel an enormous pile of ginger in mere minutes.

And I love how looking down a random alley here and there shows glimpses of the old shophouses that used to be the norm here.

Hey Jennifer! Glad you are enjoying the blog. There are several craft stores behind Jalan Petaling where it intersects with Jalan Sultan. We found a really cute one on Jalan Panggong, too, just north of the Old China Cafe. Happy shopping!
