carnivores at the fat hen

Last month we found the time to sneak away and slip in a meal with an old friend of mine at the Fat Hen, a popular spot on Johns Island.   Our favorite plate at Taste of Charleston Festival was from the Fat Hen tent, and I have a friend from college who lives nearby with her husband.

What I was delighted to discover was that this small plate is actually a huge pork confit shank, and becomes this glorious wonder nestled atop a bed of creamy truffled grits:

Fat Hen also has a regular house-made pasta, and on this particular night we found ourselves enjoying the company of warm bowl of cavatelli roasted red bell pepper and brocollini.  There’s nothing like  great bowl of homemade pasta that makes any dinner out feel well worth our time.

And if one giant leg of meat wasn’t enough, we had the lamb shank, with a delicious cherry jus over grits :

Everything was just the way you want from a good Southern night out — deliciously decadent and down-home comforting, too.  Plus, our dinner involved two hunks of meat and good company.  And that’s the makings of a fine night in my book.
