bento’ing at the beach

batbThe Gravy Baby enjoys the scene at Kiawah Island

After almost a year of living on the coast, we’ve finally picked “our” beach.  We love Kiawah Island, a barrier island about a 30-minute drive from our house.  The beach is relatively uncrowded, compared to some other public beaches in the area, which means we don’t have to fight traffic or the crowds in order to enjoy a little surf.

To make beach days a little bit more enjoyable, I usually pack up our tiffin, a stacking lunch box that I bought at Chow Kit Market back in Kuala Lumpur.  In Kuala Lumpur, the sight of people carrying these stainless-steel stacking lunch boxes was quite common, and I always wanted to stop someone carrying one to ask them to bust it open to see what goodies lie inside.  Curry? Roti?  Banana leaf fish?  The suspense would kill me, every time.

Because I already love using bento boxes for packing lunch, the four tiers of our tiffin are perfect for stashing our snack and lunch for an oceanside picnic.  I usually try to pack some sort of one-dish lunch meal, like cold peanut noodles with shredded cucumber and edamame or an Israeli couscous salad.  We use up two tiffin containers to contain lunch — the Gravy Baby is quite a big mouth to feed and usually he ends up eating more than half of whatever we have.

We always finish our meals with a heaping pile of fruit, so that usually occupies a second tiffin.  The Gravy Baby, the hubby and I also like to have a snack on the beach about halfway through our little trip, since by the time we’ve gotten dressed, loaded up the towels, sand toys, cooler bag, beach shelter and other “essentials,” and managed the drive to the beach, we’ve already been up for several hours.  And really, is there any better snack than a wedge of soft brie and some sharp cheddar on crackers?

The tiffin is also great because it takes up relatively little space and stays pretty cold in our cooler bag.  Since I know it’s pretty hard to get out to Kuala Lumpur and scour the market for your own tiffin, I’ve located some from the around the internets.  Let me know what you use yours for (and yes, telling me that “I use mine as my purse now because all I carry it in anyways are snacks and a debit card” would be totally justifiable, in my opinion).

Looks like it was a great time, and what handy little containers. I’d never heard of a tiffin before. Intriguing! 🙂
