The Gravy Baby enjoys the scene at Kiawah Island
After almost a year of living on the coast, we’ve finally picked “our” beach. We love Kiawah Island, a barrier island about a 30-minute drive from our house. The beach is relatively uncrowded, compared to some other public beaches in the area, which means we don’t have to fight traffic or the crowds in order to enjoy a little surf.

To make beach days a little bit more enjoyable, I usually pack up our tiffin, a stacking lunch box that I bought at Chow Kit Market back in Kuala Lumpur. In Kuala Lumpur, the sight of people carrying these stainless-steel stacking lunch boxes was quite common, and I always wanted to stop someone carrying one to ask them to bust it open to see what goodies lie inside. Curry? Roti? Banana leaf fish? The suspense would kill me, every time.

Because I already love using bento boxes for packing lunch, the four tiers of our tiffin are perfect for stashing our snack and lunch for an oceanside picnic. I usually try to pack some sort of one-dish lunch meal, like cold peanut noodles with shredded cucumber and edamame or an Israeli couscous salad. We use up two tiffin containers to contain lunch — the Gravy Baby is quite a big mouth to feed and usually he ends up eating more than half of whatever we have.

Looks like it was a great time, and what handy little containers. I’d never heard of a tiffin before. Intriguing! 🙂
