reality tv set, working aircraft carrier: it’s all the same, really

This week the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier has been docked at Port Klang, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.  On Sunday night, the hubby and I were invited to attend a reception onboard.  This event spoke to both of us, in very different ways.  For the hubby (and probably any man who would in certain testosterone-laden social circles refer to himself as a “dude”), visiting an aircraft carrier tapped into some deep, tucked away part of him that really loves planes and boats and cars and — let’s be honest — truckies.

I don’t have that same primal love of massive floating military transportation, but I was equally, if not more, excited, for a very, very different reason.

No, it wasn’t the handsome military men showing us the planes they fly.  The USS Nimitz was the aircraft carrier featured on the PBS series Carrier, and as a huge fan of television and pop culture, I was really thrilled to step foot on my first-ever reality show set.

Officers and pilots were available on the flight deck to answer our questions about the jets and the aircraft carrier generally, so I used the opportunity to learn.  “Is this the same hangar where that officer got in trouble for having an against-the-rules relationship with a fellow officer?  “When can I see the laundry facility where the guy was making extra money on the side for doing other people’s laundry?”  “Who from the show is still on the ship today, and when can I get their autograph?”

There was also a delicious carving station at the reception, and so I availed myself to enjoying two good, old-fashioned American roast beef sandwiches.  Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the answers to my questions were yes; no, you absolutely can’t, and no one’s left from the original show, so not today.

Please send the Nimitz back as soon as possible — someone needs to rescue us from the snowmami / snowpocalypse / snowmageddon!! Miss you two! Had a divine lunch of homemade raviolis (speck and asparagus) and delicious roast pork w/ Joe & Lisa on snowy Sunday. Sounds like the trip was fantastic!

biscuitwheelssays:

I heard about your delicious lunch and am jealous! I’m so glad you guys found a tasty way to shield yourselves from the snowstorm.
