Sri Lanka: my camera isn’t awesome enough to capture this scenery in one frame

We woke up at 3:00 am our time this morning.  I fed the Gravy Baby and, instead of putting him back down in his crib, I strapped him into his car seat.  We took a one-hour taxi ride to the airport, and then we hopped a 6:30 am, three-hour flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka.  A driver met us at the airport and took us 4.5 hours across simultaneously the most beautiful and the most undeveloped terrain I’ve ever seen.  The total amount of time we spent in transit was more than 12 hours, and the whole time we were doing it, I kept asking the hubby if we done lost our minds.  We have a 6-month old baby full of Gravy (22 pounds of it, to be exact).  We are going to a country that neither of us have been to before, and quite possibly the most off-the-beaten-track place I’ve ever been.

Left: the Gravy Baby gets used to his new surroundings; top, right: local buffalo milk yogurt and kithul (local palm) syrup totally made things right after a long, dusty trip; bottom, right: this lady sold us cashews from the side of the road, wielded a machete, and also loved the Gravy Baby

Well, we’ve only been here a few hours, but so far, so good.  I feel like we’ve traveled to the end of the earth, but in the best way possible: it’s so quiet and calm here, just like all the lovely people we’ve met so far.  The hubby and the Gravy Baby are taking advantage of the stillness here to take a long nap, and I’m about to do the same.
