Soy Vay Salmon Steak Teriyaki

One of the best things about writing about food is, well, ALL OF THE FOOD. Recently the fine folks at Degustabox, a subscription service that brings you delicious snacks and international goods every month right to your door, reached out to me to try their service, which just launched in the U.S. Plus, they’re offering Grits and Chopsticks readers 50% off their first box using the code DEGUSTA10 at checkout!

With the ingredients from my first Degustabox, I made this very tasty salmon steak teriyaki using a prepared teriyaki sauce from a company called Soy Vay. The sauce contains no preservatives and additives and is a great shortcut for weeknight dinners when there’s no time for messing around to get your own teriyaki sauce just right.

Degustabox

My Degustabox came with lots of yummy snacks. In addition to the Soy Vay teriyaki sauce, my box also included Wise Sea Salt popcorn, Topo Chico mineral water, cinnamon flavored peanut butter from Jif, Haribo sour gummy bears, Orchard Valley Harvest nut mixes and Vita Coco coconut oil, just to name a few. The Soy Vay teriyaki sauce came in very handy right before our movers arrived to pack up our house. I was trying my best not to buy too many new ingredients and had already begun packing up our kitchen, and I needed to make something with minimal fuss for dinner. Enter Soy Vay.

Soy Vay Salmon Steak Teriyaki

Besides the amazing Jewish-Asian name of the product, Soy Vay’s sauce is soy-based, with hints of honey, ginger, garlic and sesame seeds. I coated a few salmon steaks that I’d defrosted in the sauce and let it marinate for about an hour before pan searing the steaks. The result was flaky salmon flavored with just the right sticky-sweet sauce.

Soy Vay Salmon Steak Teriyaki

I served our salmon steak teriyaki with freshly minced green onions and steamed rice, and the kids gobbled up every bite.

Of course, the kids then started working through the Degustabox, snack by glorious snack. We all loved exploring new snacks that we might otherwise have passed over in a grocery store. The sour gummy bears by Haribo are kind of everything. And they show up RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP!

Ingredients

  • 4 salmon steaks
  • 6 tablespoons Soy Vay Very Very Teriyaki Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 green onions (minced)

Instructions

  • Rinse salmon steaks under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Pour Soy Vay sauce into a gallon ziploc bag or a baking dish and put the salmon steaks in, turning once or twice to coat. Cover (if in a dish) and refrigerate for at least 45 minutes.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet with a lid over medium-high heat until hot. Add olive oil and heat until shimmering. Remove salmon steaks from the marinade, brushing the salmon to remove excess marinade.
  • Sear the steaks for 3-4 minutes per side, then cover the steaks and lower the heat to medium-low, cooking for another 4-6 minutes until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Serve with minced green onions.
